What You Need To Know About the Five Areas HHS Is Targeting This Open Enrollment Season

Topics: Health Care Reform, Exchanges, Medicaid, Federal Government, Health Care Legislation

During the third open enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act, HHS hopes to have 10 million people sign up for health insurance through the exchanges and Medicaid. This year's open enrollment push comes as the population of uninsured has shrunk, making HHS' efforts more difficult.

This year also marks a slight change in strategy for HHS. The department announced it would target five U.S. regions:

  • Chicago;
  • Dallas;
  • Houston;
  • Miami; and
  • Northern New Jersey.

Over the course of the open enrollment period -- from Nov. 1 through Jan. 31, 2016 -- American Health Line plans to track HHS' progress, also focusing on these areas. We've gathered key information about each region, which you can see on the map below. Clicking on each dot will highlight for each region:

  • Total population;
  • Median income;
  • Uninsured rates, including by race/ethnicity;
  • Exchange type; and
  • Whether its state expanded Medicaid.

Data were obtained from the 2014 Census.
